Why Are My Emails Showing as Opened Immediately After Sending?

If you're using EmailMerge365 email tracking and notice that some emails show as opened immediately after sending, this does not always mean the recipient has personally opened the message.
Many email systems perform automated security and preview checks that can trigger email tracking events.

Why This Happens
Email tracking typically works by loading a small tracking image (pixel) when an email is opened. Some systems automatically load email content or check links before the recipient views the message.

Common causes include:
  • Security scanners and antivirus systems that scan incoming emails and links for threats.
  • Microsoft Safe Links and Microsoft Defender protections that automatically inspect links in Microsoft 365 environments.
  • Link preview services used by email clients and mobile devices.
  • Automatic image loading, which can trigger an email open when the tracking pixel is loaded.
What This Means
As a result, some email opens and clicks recorded by EmailMerge365 may be generated by automated security systems rather than by a human recipient.
This behavior is common across most email tracking platforms and is not specific to EmailMerge365.

Additional Information
While email tracking provides valuable engagement insights, open and click activity should be considered an indication of possible engagement rather than definitive proof that a recipient personally opened or clicked an email.
